Unlike the Catholic norm, we didn’t baptize Em when she was an infant. We had various reasons as to why her baptism was “delayed”; however, I am so glad that she was a bit older because she got to experience the day herself. This is so special because she’ll have memories of this day and not many of us Catholics can say that.
Both Steve and my family are devout Catholics, we were born into our religion and attended mass every Sunday with our parents. To be completely honest, as I got older, going to church became a chore. I still feel this way. I don’t think we necessarily need to attend mass every Sunday to be connected to God. I feel just as connected to God now than when I was going to church every Sunday. I cherish my relationship with God and I like the intimacy of that. Some people might say we are delinquents (:D), but I say there isn’t one specific way you can be close to God. As long as you keep that line of commitment to God open, you can reach him any time.
All that to say, although we aren’t regular church-goers, it was a no-brainier for us to raise Em with the same set of morals and values we were raised. And big part of those morals and values come from our religion. Like everything else in life, I want to open the door for her to experience God and Catholicism. She will one day find God on her own. Her God may not even be the God we know and believe, but whatever God she finds will shape her to be a kind person. Her God will guide her in her toughest times and listen to her prayers and be there for her no matter what.
This first step of Baptism solidifies her forever Guardian in life. And as her parents, this milestone is overwhelmingly an emotional one. Steve and I were proud parents that Sunday, September 23, 2018.
We sincerely thank all of our family and friends who joined us for this sacrament and celebrated Emma. We are so very grateful to have all of you in our lives. Additional thanks to Mary, my sister and Paul, my brother-in-law for standing as her Godparents. We know this job comes with a lot of weight, and we appreciate you guys for taking on the responsibilities of Godparents.
