Now you see it, now you don’t! Is it magic? Nope, it’s laser hair removal!
Are you tired of waxing? If so, perk up your ears ladies (and gentlemen), today on the blog I’m talking about laser hair removal! This was my first time getting anything laser removed so you bet your little tush I did my full due diligence before going in for the treatment at Blue Water Spa in Raleigh, NC. Because it was my first time, I decided to get a small area of hair removed, my upper lip. Before I go into the details of my personal experience, here are few most frequently asked questions about laser hair removal. You can also visit, Blue Water Spa’s Laser Hair Removal page for more information.
What is laser hair removal?
In layman’s term, targeting unwanted hair on your body by exposing pulses of laser lights to kill the hair follicles.
Is it permanent?
Overtime, due to dead hair follicles, hair won’t grow back. I have to stress here that it’s not a one time thing. It’s a process, even for a small area like your upper lip, one session of laser zaps won’t kill off your hair follicles. It depends on your body, your hair and its growth. Also, there is a chance that your hair can grow back due to bodily changes. i.e. pregnancy.
Does it hurt? What does it feel like?
The pain level really depends on your pain tolerance. I personally didn’t find it painful at all and definitely less painful than waxing or tweezing. For me, it felt more like a tingling sensation than anything. Each zap felt warm and cool at the same time.
My experience:
Now onto my experience at Blue Water Spa. I went in during my lunch hour on a work day. I was told when scheduling that it wouldn’t take more than that and they were right! I was in and out in 30 mins or so. I first met with Ashley, a Nurse Practitioner to review my medical history and to determine if I was suitable for the treatment. Blue Water Spa is a fully integrated medical spa and plastic surgery office and all aesthetic staff on hair laser removal are trained by board certified doctors. Not only that, Blue Water Spa is a national training center for laser hair removal, so I knew I was in good hands. I honestly wouldn’t have done it otherwise because I’m paranoid AF. Haha.
Once I was cleared by Ashley, I met Lauren who is a medical assistant and laser technician. Bless her heart, Lauren was so patient while I asked all the annoying, first-timer questions about laser hair removal. ;P She also let me know that dark, thick and lots of hair works best and because I had thin, light colored hair on my upper lip, laser might not detect them and suggested a different area of my body for removal. But I decided to go with my upper lip anyway since it was my first time getting anything laser-ed. I LOVED Lauren, she was such a doll explaining everything in layman’s terms and making sure I was comfortable with everything before moving forward.
After we talked through the procedure, the actual treatment took less than a minute. It was 6 or so zaps and it was finished. As mentioned above, it wasn’t painful for me at all. After the treatment Lauren applied soothing cream and my upper lip was red for a hour or so. Other than no direct sun exposure, aftercare was nonexistent, and I went about my day right after the treatment.
As Lauren mentioned, because I didn’t have much hair, the laser didn’t detect all of it but I definitely noticed a lot of it actually fell off! It’s been about a month since my treatment, and I don’t see any hair growth. It does take about 4-6 weeks for re-growth of hair in that area, so I’m sure it’ll grow back. But I think I’ll try a different area for my next laser adventure.
If you are on the edge about laser hair removal, I highly recommend it! But do your own research and find the perfect treatment facility. As you all know, I love Blue Water Spa, I wouldn’t trust anyone else to laser anything on my body, that’s for sure!
