Steve and I both agreed from the beginning that we would find out the sex of baby #2, but I wanted to have an intimate family moment where the three of us will know together at the same time. With Em, it was just Steve and me, so we found out at her anatomy scan. But this time around, we had our sonogram tech write down the sex and had a friend order a gender reveal cake for us. It was so special to share the gender reveal moment together as a family.
If you’ve been following my second pregnancy journey, you know that Em desperately wanted a sister. We were easing her into the idea of potentially having a baby brother, but she was definitely a bit sad to see blue inside the cake. I’m happy to report that she is actually very excited about having a baby brother! She already picked out a nick name for him and everything!
Before we found out the sex for Emma, I wrote this Pregnancy Old Wives’ Tales post to play the guessing game. I wanted to do the same with the second pregnancy even though we already know the sex. It’s just fun to see if these old wives’ tales are true or false. So here we go!
1. Chinese Gender Predictor Test
This is one of the popular ones you can find online, plug in the conception month and your age and it checks the Chinese Calendar. It said a boy!
2. Korean Pregnancy Dreams
In Korean culture, pregnancy dreams are a must when someone gets pregnant. They are called taemong (태몽). Most of the time people around you dream these pregnancy dreams for you. These dreams vary from predicting a future pregnancy, the actual pregnancy and/or predicting sex of the baby. With Em, several people dreamed for me, but this time around, it was only my mom. When I didn’t even know I was pregnant, she asked me if I was because she had taemong. She dreamed two cute looking, animated cobras in bed, under the blanket with its heads sticking out. The cobras were bright green and white and they looked almost cartoon like and not scary. Around the cobras were huge eggs, also on the bed and it looked like they were all dancing. Apparently according to my mom this was definitely a boy dream.
3. Sweet or Salty?
It is often said that when you crave something sweet, it’s a girl and salty, a boy. As soon as I was able to eat normally in the second trimester, most of the things I craved were spicy, savory, salty food. I did crave some sweets here and there but I ate a lot of spicy Korean food and that’s what I craved the most. According to this old wives’ tale, salty/savory food means a boy.
4. Carrying high or low?
This one is tricky because I can’t tell if I’m carrying high or low. If you are carrying high it means a girl and low means a boy. I think I am carrying higher than I did with Em. So according to this, it means it’s a girl.
5. Complexion
It’s an old wives’ tale that when you are having a girl, the girl takes all the beauty out of your face/complexion. And you glow more if you are carrying a boy. With Em, I broke out all over my face, chest and back as soon as I found out I was pregnant. With this pregnancy, I didn’t break out until my second trimester. Currently at 23 weeks, I am definitely not glowing. In fact my face has dried out a lot to the point I will occasionally have a rash all over my cheeks. Not attractive at all. LOL. Nonetheless, I will say this old wives’ tale yields to predicting a girl.
So there ya go, folks. According to above mentioned five old wives’ tales, it’s boy 3: girl 2! We are definitely having a boy, confirmed by the ultrasound. 🙂 I’m still in shock and can’t believe we will have a little Steve in our mix. I’m such a girl mom that I don’t know what to expect, but I sure am ecstatic to be a boy mom too!
